The Bell

This bell hung in the bell tower of Old Central at the corner of Commercial Row and West St. from June 1900 until 1975, when Old Central was demolished.  The bell cost $200, the money for which was raised by popular subscription.  The bell came to Reno from Salinas, CA.  The bell weighs 1000 lbs.  It was apparently a used bell when Reno bought it.  The front inscription reads: "Fire & Water Committee, C. B. Edwards, Thos. Boyce, J.P. Shine".  The rear is inscribed "W. T. Garratt, S. F. CAL.  1877, Chief Engineer David Scannel".  The bell was also etched (apparently by hand) near the top with the name A. J. Coffee and the date 11/25 1897.  Click on the following link to see a picture of the bell in the bell tower at Old Central.  1917ALFweb.jpg
